The Kabon Carbon Standard

A boutique African carbon registry.

Every credit on Kabon.Africa is issued under a published methodology, backed by a permanence buffer pool, and tracked on Polygon. We're not Verra — we're a faster, simpler, Africa-first alternative for projects too small or too local for the global registries.

How a credit is issued

  1. 1
    Project submitted under a methodology

A landowner registers their project and picks a published Kabon Carbon Standard methodology (listed below). The methodology dictates the buffer reserve, monitoring cadence, and the kinds of evidence we require.

  2. 2
    Admin review

The Kabon team reviews the submission for completeness, legitimacy, and methodology fit. Communication happens through the project's private comment thread. Documents are stored on IPFS for an immutable trail.

  3. 3
    Carbon assessment

An assigned reviewer measures the carbon impact against the chosen methodology — baseline, project emissions, and net tonnes. The number stamps onto a Verification record.

  4. 4
    Issuance + buffer split

Credits are minted on Polygon (ERC-1155). The methodology's buffer percentage is automatically diverted to the platform-wide Buffer Pool. Only the remainder is tradeable.

  5. 5
    Trade & retirement

Approved buyers purchase credits in USDC. Retired credits become non-transferable on-chain and receive a printable retirement certificate with QR-verified provenance.

  6. 6
    Ongoing monitoring

Per the methodology, projects re-submit monitoring evidence on a fixed cadence. Reversal events (fire, conversion) trigger pool drawdown — pool credits are retired to backfill, so buyer offsets stay whole.

What we are — and aren't

Kabon credits are not Verra or Gold Standard credits. They are issued under our own published standard. We're built for African projects too small, too local, or too time-pressed for the years-long international registry process.

Verification is performed by the Kabon review team, not by an ISO 14065-accredited third party. If your reporting requires accredited verification (institutional ESG disclosures, compliance markets), Kabon credits may not be the right fit yet.

The buffer pool is platform-administered, not a third-party insurance product. We publish its balance on this page so you can verify our reserve at any time.

Every credit, traceable.

Each retirement certificate carries the methodology code, project ID, and on-chain transaction hash. Audit any credit from the certificate's QR.
